Magnificent Revolution's power surge

Magnificent Revolution are getting behind CC Hackney, Interlinkx CiC and Cycling Uganda.

After visiting lead person Adam Walker at Mag. Rev's base on Hackney City Farm. It was agreed that there is plenty of potential for interesting and productive partnership work in all three linked projects.

Adam presented me with one 24v motor to take to Cycling Uganda in the capital Kampala. It's ready to use, complete with the aluminum contact point for the rear wheel's tyre to spin that thing. This motor is the type used in electric scooters and can produce 300w of DC power (the scooters are not so challenging in my eyes now:))

Power produced in this way has many applications including, LED lighting, computer/phone charging, sound and vision.

New at Fawcett Youth & Community Bike Club will be our own rig; a pedal generator and LED lights. We can charge members's phones and power our radio - self sufficient in 2012.

Planning for partnership work and increased learning opportunities into 2012 with Magificent Revolution; this is something interesting to look forward to, happy new year in advance.

Look Mum No Hands

CCH club fellows; Shaveh and Jace Daley joined in by revving the Magnificent Revolution generators to supply electricity for the Gorilla Film Magazine's short film night at LMNH. The evening was entertaining, thought provoking and pleasurable as well as being a bit of a work out for those who donated their leg power in watts for conversion.

Our main 'man' 11 year old Geoffrey Butler is getting on with the programme, he's started work on one of the supply of 2nd hand kiddies bikes we have in store. These are for local families once they've been checked over by our own capable young mechanics. This one's a Raleigh Buzzer and is destined to be handed to a young relative of Geoffry's from Fawcett Estate.

Pleased with the performance, it's time to chill. Our lad is set to join De-shaun Hughs this Saturday morning on the way to check out Cycling Club Hackney's youth training session, he's sure looking forward to that.

The gloves pictured bellow are specially designed for protecting and keeping hands clean whilst doing mechanical work. They are modeled by long time member De-shaun Hughs who purchased them for a small fee from (i believe) the best pound shop in Hackney on Chatsworth Road. FYI it's the one across the road from the Too Sweet Caribbean food place. Also featured in D's hands are a pair of Park Tool cable clippers - essential kit for any decent bike fixer.

Previous lead worker Marcus Ahmad has moved on to a new job in Bristol but passes his best wishes to all he knows at Fawcett YBMP. Michael Binnie has stepped up to replace him, you can see Michael signing in above. Another new addition is our own Kevin Cabey who will be another friendly face and helping hand for those youngsters in need of bike fixing advice and guidance. Also new to sign in is local young resident Babette Holden, who comes on site as a volunteer person available to help her peers with tasks such as form filling, applications and tests.

Following a similar pause for thought, caused by the amusing bulge that often occurs in a pumped up inner tube, members went on to consider is there such a thing as a pregnant worm?

We are now offering members of Fawcett Bike Club AQAs in First Aid and basic Bike maintenance. As well as Cytech Level 2 for our more experienced mechanics, a great assett for anyone wishing to get a job in the bike biz.

If anyone out there has any old bikes that they wish to donate bring them along on a Thursday evening and we'll gladly make use of them,

Stephen 'Ace' Doyle - Nightingale project

This was done under the agreement that young Stephen would take responsibility for his new bike and keep it long term by using the lock supplied with it in return for him being a good volunteer and supporter of the Nightingale bike project. Stephen attends with regularity and is always helpful and respectful to the club, it's members and staff. He has managed to keep the bike in his possession for a record length of time and aims to keep this up because he has become...'too attached to my street machine'

The evidence above shows that youth bike maintenance clubs are not just about learning to turn spanners and pump pumps. Jez Peter from Nightingale's bike club bears witness to this, the positive change in him of late is distinct and clear.

Alfie and Jez stand by the bike they have got together that was donated to the project by Stoke Newington Police Station. Alfie is a good young bike mechanic who helped his friend Jez get this bike in a fit and road worthy condition.

On a murky and misty Saturday morning, members of the Fawcett estate youth bike club; Shannon, Chloe, Sean and Marcus met up with their counter parts from Nightingale estate; Mahmoud, David and project leader Keir. This was for a cycle ride from Springfield Marina, down the tow path beside the River Lea, all the way to Hackney Wick and onto the Greenway from where progress was observed on the London 2012 Olympic site. After congratulating the workers on doing such a great job it was off for a celebratory cafe lunch in jolly Hackney Wick. Despite the weather a fine day was had and after the ride it made us all think we should be doing more of this sort of thing!
Expect news of more bike riding trips as the year unfolds.

How to use a hand held mini pump

When using a hand held mini pump it is important to brace it in such a way to prevent damage to the valve, failure to do this could cost you a new tube.
With the Presta type valve you need to un-lock the screw in order for air to flow in, remembering to do it up afterwards.

Staff at Kampala's Bicco Forex Bureau; Hakeem Sekaya, Rashka Razaak and guard hand over the goods.

Picking up the boxes before they finally get to our two new assistants, one being top contact and arranger Stephen Okello. stephen is Originally from the northern town of Lira but is now resident in Kinawataka Parish, Mbuya district in the south of Kampala. Stephen is the secretary of the newly founded Lira CC and will be working closely with Cycling Club Hackney going forward.

Young volunteers from the Nightingale project, brother and sister Akil and Shakila Barry were on hand to help pack two donated bikes before they are to be taken for air cargo freight on Thursday 4th November.
Also packed into each box were some bike tools, a football, and an assortment of other useful items.
Many thanks to London Fields Cycles for assisting with this process and allowing it to happen in their workshop.

Local young volunteers, Mahmoud Soboh and Jelani Barry get to work on setting-up and preparing one of the clubs bikes (donated by Hackney police) to be shipped to our contact in Kampala, Uganda.

This small step is actually part of a new initiative to lead on to a youth exchange project with the working title: CC Hackney and Kampala CC Youth Exchange 2010-2012.

The idea of this venture is for a combined Interlinkx CIC Youth Bike Maintenance Club and Cycling Club Hackney sports delegation to visit Kampala in 2011. There they will invite a team of young Ugandan cycling enthusiasts back over to share in the 2012 London Olympic experience that will be happening in and around Hackney come 27 July-12 Aug (Olympic Games) and 29 Aug-9 Sept (Paralympic Games)

We're looking forward to cultivating relations and fund raising to make this possible for our partners in Uganda and our young cycling volunteers in Hackney.

The first phase of this activity is being supported by the Hackney Homes Staff Alpine Challenge Team, who will be helping during a reconnaissance and fact finding trip this November.

Some of the bikes that have been accumulating at Hackney's Police stations are finally being sent Interlinkx's way, It's well worth the wait - thank you! This is with an agreement that any youngsters working on them are given qualified instruction and make positive community contributions. These bikes are to be released after being made road worthy and registered with Immobilise.

Young people are to be advised about how to avoid loosing their new bikes and will offered an incentive to keep hold of it for as long as they want to. No more of that "easy come easy go" attitude please.

Also as a priority, two or three cycles will be prepared and sent to appreciative recipients via Re-Cycle bikes for Africa or shipped by air freight direct to one of our contacts in Kampala, Uganda.

New Site Opens - 1 Olympus Square Nightingale Estate London E5 8PL

The launch of Interlinkx's Nightingale Estate youth and community cycle maintenance project took place on this date. Between 4.30 - 6.30pm the centre at 1 Olympus Square was open for supporters, sponsors, members, staff, invited guests and passers by. Refreshments were provided by the over 50's club in the Square which were enjoyed by the gathering.

Youth cycle maintenance sessions will continue weekly on Wednesday evenings with doors open at 4.30pm to close for the structured session from 5pm until 6.30pm.

From 7pm - 9pm the same evening, Cycling Club Hackney will be in session in. This will be a social for members and guests that will include training and coaching opportunities as well as a time to mix planning events and functions with getting to know new members.

Interlinkx CIC is launching another bike maintenance club at 1 Olympus Square Nightingale Estate on Wednesday 24th February.The project is supported by Hackney Homes,Southern Housing Group, Nightingale Community Development Fund, The Safer Neighbourhoods Team, The Learning Trust and Cycling Club Hackney. Classes are starting on Wednesday evenings from 4.45 -6-45pm followed by Cycling Club Hackney's sports club night from 7pm - 9pm. Membership is free for those under 18 years old.
At the launch catering will be provided by Noreen & The Over 50s Lunch Club from Nightingale Estate.

New Authors for Fawcett

Regular staff at Fawcett Youth Bike Maintenance; Marcus Ahmad, Ato Halm Quashie are set to add new postings for the blog in 2010. New to the team is staff member and local resident David Sheppard, also a blogger David very keen to get involved and make it happen with all things cycling.
It's been a long time with our heads down but the Tuesday night project (6-8pm) is still very much alive and kicking, maintaining bikes and relations with our members.
Marcus along with three youths; Scott, Femi & Imran are working on their Cyctech Level 1 cycle maintenance folders and expect to be fully qualified before long.

Organised and managed by Interlinkx CIC (supported by Hackney Homes, the local Safer Neighbourhoods Team and Fawcett Estate TRA) the Fawcett Bike Club sessions run on Tuesday evenings 6pm-8pm, they have been running for one year and are progessing well.
10 - 20 young people attend every week, they age from 12 – 18, four members of which are females. There to offer qualified cycle mechanic instruction and good youth work practice are Keir Apperley & Marcus Ahmad who are also a cycling coaches.
The attendees are becoming skilled and competent at cycle maintenance. They are a likable group who welcome new members, have a positive outlook and a sense of fun. Recently four members from the club achieved the first part of the nationally recognised cycle maintenance accreditation; Cytech Level One. With this certificate and experience as trainee cycle mechanics, two members, Sean Saint-Lewis and Cory Hall have gained part time employment at Two Wheels Good (Crouch End branch) and London Fields Cycles respectively. This work is in addition to the voluntary time they put in as assistants during the bike club sessions where they are picking up experience and insight as peer educators. Another trainee; Ato Halm-Quashie who is from Clapton Park, is also on the programme. He has shown that with the right support he can go to an area he previously deemed un-safe because of the current youth post-code affiliation issue. 17 year old Ato now feels 'at home' whilst doing his trainee time at Fawcett Estate. All four members are set to complete the Cyctech Level 1 course and become fully qualified cycle mechanics by attending the two day practical assessment sessions at PJCS Training Centre in Milton Keynes. This aspect of the project is funded by Greenboard and the Fawcett TRA.
